Which Hydraulic and Spindle Oil Should Textile Mills in Gujarat Actually Use?
If you run a textile unit anywhere between Sanand, Viramgam and Kadi, you’ve probably had this conversation with your maintenance head at least once: “Same oil chalega ke change karvu padse?” It’s a fair question, and honestly, most mill owners get a half-answer from whoever is selling them the drum that month. So let’s actually go through it properly.
Textile machinery isn’t one single category of equipment. A ring frame, a draw frame, a loom, and a compressor feeding your pneumatic systems all put very different demands on lubricants. Treating them the same way, just because “it’s all oil,” is where a lot of unplanned downtime quietly comes from.
Why textile machines are harder on oil than people assume
Spinning and weaving units run almost round the clock, often in three shifts. The machines generate continuous vibration, moderate to high heat at the bearings, and in humid Gujarat weather, there’s also a fair bit of moisture in the air to deal with. Add cotton lint and dust into the mix, and you have an environment where the wrong oil doesn’t just wear out faster, it can actually damage spindle bearings within months instead of years.
This is exactly why textile mills need oil that resists oxidation, sheds moisture well, and keeps its film strength even at high spindle speeds (some ring frames run well above 18,000 RPM).
Spindle oil: the one component people get wrong most often
Spindle bearings are precision components. A slightly heavier viscosity than recommended and you lose speed and increase power consumption. Go too light and you risk metal-to-metal contact during startup.
For most ring frames and twisting machines, a low viscosity spindle oil (in the ISO VG 10 range) works well because it flows instantly at startup and keeps friction low even at very high RPM. Servo Spin and Servo Spin EE are built for exactly this kind of application, and the EE variant is worth considering if your mill runs extended shifts, since it’s formulated for a longer service life between changes.
A small but important point: spindle oil should never be topped up carelessly with whatever hydraulic oil is lying around in the store. It’s a different oil family entirely, and mixing the two shortens bearing life.
Hydraulic oil for looms, compressors and auxiliary systems
Most modern looms, along with the hydraulic systems used in warping and sizing sections, need a hydraulic oil that can handle frequent start-stop cycles without foaming or losing pressure control. Servo System HLP and the Servo System XLP series are common choices here, with the XLP Gold grade preferred where machines run under higher pressure or where oil change intervals need to be stretched a bit further to reduce maintenance cost.
If your unit has pneumatic systems fed by air compressors, that’s a separate requirement again. Reciprocating and screw compressors used in textile units typically do well with the Servo Press series, chosen based on the compressor type and discharge pressure rather than a one-size-fits-all grade.
Gear oil for drives and gearboxes
Textile machines also carry a fair number of gearboxes, in draw frames, combers and roving frames especially. These usually call for an EP (extreme pressure) gear oil. Servo Mesh Gold or Servo Mesh XP are commonly used depending on the load and operating temperature of the gearbox in question.
A quick way to think about it
Rather than asking “which one oil do I buy for the whole mill,” it helps to break it down by section:
Spinning section (ring frames, spindles): low viscosity spindle oil, changed on a fixed schedule rather than “when it looks dirty.” Weaving and auxiliary hydraulics: hydraulic oil matched to system pressure, not just whatever was used last time. Gearboxes and drives: EP gear oil suited to load and running temperature. Compressed air systems: compressor oil matched to compressor type.
Getting the right oil, consistently
The bigger issue most mills face isn’t picking the right grade once. It’s getting genuine, consistent quality every time they reorder, especially when there are so many diluted or mislabelled products floating around in the market.
Uma Steel Traders has been an authorized SERVO stockist in Gujarat since 2016, supplying genuine Indian Oil lubricants to textile and manufacturing units across Sanand, Viramgam, Mandal, Detroj, Banaskantha and Patan. We keep over 500 barrels in stock and also have access to 15,000 kL of storage at the Indian Oil CFA warehouse in Sanand, so bulk and repeat orders for mills don’t run into supply gaps.
