Mobil, Shell, Castrol, BPCL, HPCL or Servo: How to Actually Choose an Industrial Oil Brand

Ask ten maintenance heads which brand is best and you’ll get ten confident answers, usually based on whatever they used at their first job. The honest position is that all six names above make good industrial lubricants. What matters is which one fits your machines, your budget and your supply situation.

So instead of crowning a winner, here’s a six point scorecard you can use for any of them. Run your own plant through it.

1. What does your machine’s manual actually say?

Start here, always. Many OEMs specify an ISO viscosity grade and a performance standard, and a few name approved brands, especially for warranty on newer imported machinery. If your manual names a brand, that settles it for the warranty period. If it only names a grade and specification, every brand on this list can compete.

2. Does the product range cover everything you run?

A plant rarely needs one oil. It needs hydraulic oil, gear oil, grease, compressor oil, maybe cutting fluid and heat transfer fluid. Mobil, Shell and Castrol all have wide ranges, each with their own product families such as Shell Tellus and Omala or Mobil DTE and Mobilgear. Indian Oil’s Servo range, and the ranges from BPCL and HPCL, also cover most of what an industrial plant buys. Check your full list, not just your biggest consumption item.

3. Is it available when you need it?

This is where brands behave very differently on the ground. A brand with great technical literature does you little good if the stockist in your area runs out of your grade every second month. Ask how much stock is held locally and how quickly a repeat order arrives. We hold over 500 barrels at Sanand and have access to 15,000 kL of storage at the Indian Oil CFA warehouse, which is a big reason local plants stay supplied.

4. What is the price, taken over the full oil life?

Compare cost per litre, but also compare change interval and top-up consumption. A cheaper oil that needs changing sooner is not cheaper. Public sector brands like Servo, BPCL and HPCL are often competitive on price for equivalent grades, while some premium synthetic lines from international brands cost more and justify it only when your operating conditions demand extended life.

5. Can you trust what is in the drum?

Counterfeit and diluted oil exists across every popular brand, because popular brands get copied. The brand matters less than the seller. Buy from an authorized stockist, ask for batch details and an invoice, and check sealing and labelling. Be suspicious of any rate far below the market.

6. Who supports you when something goes wrong?

When a gearbox runs hot or a hydraulic system foams, you want someone who answers the phone and understands your machine. Local technical help counts for more than a glossy brochure.

Where does Servo fit?

Servo, made by Indian Oil, is a strong option for most standard industrial applications in Gujarat, especially when local availability and price consistency matter. We are an authorized Servo stockist, so we naturally lean that way, but we’d rather you pick the right oil than the wrong one with our name on it. If your machine truly needs a specific other brand, we’ll tell you.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most standard industrial grades, performance depends on meeting the right specification, and Servo meets common ISO and OEM standards. Highly specialised or imported machinery may specify a particular brand.

Usually yes, if the viscosity grade and specification match. A flush is recommended, especially for hydraulic systems with sensitive valves.

No. Uma Steel Traders is an authorized Servo stockist, and we supply only Servo products.

It varies by grade and season. Compare the full cost over the oil change interval rather than the per-litre price alone.
