HPCL vs Servo Hydraulic Oil: An Honest Comparison for Industrial Buyers

Every few months, some purchase manager calls us up asking the same thing: “HPCL sara che ke Servo?” And honestly, it’s a reasonable question, because both are Indian public sector brands, both have been around for decades, and both show up on approved vendor lists across manufacturing plants in Gujarat.
We’re not going to tell you one is universally better than the other, because that would be a lazy answer and probably wrong for your specific machine. What we can do is walk you through how they actually compare, so you can make the call based on your equipment and not on whoever called your purchase department last.

Where both brands come from

HPCL, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Indian Oil Corporation, which manufactures the Servo range, are both government-owned refining and marketing companies. Both run their own R&D centres, both supply to OEMs, and both have hydraulic oil ranges that meet standard ISO and DIN specifications used across Indian industry. So on paper, at a base specification level, the two aren’t far apart. The differences that actually matter show up in three places: product range depth, local availability, and after-sale support.

Comparing on formulation and product range

Indian Oil’s Servo hydraulic range includes several tiers built for different operating conditions. The standard Servo System HLP series covers general purpose hydraulic applications, while the Servo System XLP series is built for anti-wear performance under higher pressure, and the XLP Gold variant is aimed at machines where longer oil life and better filterability matter, such as CNC and precision hydraulic systems. HPCL’s equivalent hydraulic ranges (marketed under names like Hydrol and Enklo) cover similar territory in terms of ISO viscosity grades, and in our experience, plants that already run HPCL-approved equipment tend to stick with it mainly because it’s already specified in their maintenance manuals, not because of a dramatic performance gap. In short: if your machine’s OEM manual doesn’t specifically mandate one brand, the choice usually comes down to which one your supplier can consistently provide as a genuine, unadulterated product.

Where the real difference usually shows up

This is the part that doesn’t get talked about enough. Hydraulic oil is a low margin, high volume product, and that makes it one of the more commonly diluted or mislabelled categories in the local lubricant market. So the practical difference between brands often has less to do with the oil itself and more to do with: Whether your stockist is actually authorized, or just repackaging drums. How the oil has been stored (heat exposure and contamination matter more than people realize). Whether you’re getting the specific grade your machine needs, or whatever happens to be in stock that week. We say this as a Servo stockist, but it applies exactly the same way to HPCL or any other brand. A genuine product from an unauthorized or careless seller can perform worse than a correctly stored, genuine product from a properly authorized dealer, regardless of which brand name is on the drum.

A simple way to decide

If your equipment manual specifies a brand, follow it, since warranty terms are sometimes tied to it. If it only specifies an ISO VG grade and performance standard (which is common for hydraulic systems), then either brand can work, and your decision should shift to: Who can guarantee genuine, undiluted product with a batch certificate. Who has enough stock to support your plant without supply gaps during peak production. Who actually understands your machinery well enough to recommend the right sub-grade, not just the right family of oil.

Our position, plainly stated

Uma Steel Traders is an authorized SERVO stockist for Gujarat, supplying industries across Sanand, Ahmedabad, Viramgam, Mandal, Detroj, Banaskantha and Patan since 2016. We’re not neutral on Servo, obviously, since it’s what we supply. But we’d rather you make an informed choice than a rushed one, because a wrong hydraulic oil decision costs a lot more in downtime than the price difference between brands ever will.
If you want a second opinion on which grade actually suits your hydraulic system, whether you currently use HPCL, Servo or anything else, send us your machine details and we’ll give you a straight answer, even if that answer is “your current oil is fine.” Call us at +91 74340 10606 or check our Industrial Lubricating Oils range for full specifications.

Faqs

Is Servo hydraulic oil compatible with machines currently running HPCL oil?

In most cases, yes, since both meet the same ISO VG and anti-wear (AW) specifications. That said, a proper flush is recommended when switching brands to avoid mixing additive packages, especially in systems with sensitive servo valves.

Less than people think, as long as the product is genuine and matches the correct viscosity grade. What affects lifespan far more is contamination control, correct oil change intervals, and whether the oil was stored properly before it reached you.

Pricing between the two is generally close for equivalent grades, and can shift slightly based on region and supply. It’s rarely a large enough gap to be the deciding factor on its own.

Buy only from an authorized stockist who can show batch documentation, and check that the packaging seal and labelling match Indian Oil’s official product literature. If a price seems unusually low compared to the market rate, that’s a signal to check the source before you buy.
